Metal Detectors Overview

Why waste time reading a lot other resources when this article contains everything you have been looking for?
The metal detector is a very useful tool. They are used by the military for things such as de-mining a mine field, by airports and other security checkpoints to keep airplanes and other areas safe, by geophysical prospectors to discover the metal content of certain rocks, and by old fashioned beach-combers and treasure hunters. Metal detectors are also part of the whole detector radar family, which includes radar detectors, car radar detector systems, weather radar systems, and just about anything to do with cordless radar systems. This is because many detectors employ the use of radar technology as well.
Metal detectors are made up of an oscillator that produces an alternating current that passes through a coil, which creates an alternating magnetic field. This means that when an electronically conductive metal is near the detector, it creates eddies of air, which causes a change in the magnetic field, which enables the operator to see where the metal is.
Handheld detectors are the most common, and are used in the majority of cases. Even land mines can be detected through the use of handheld devices. However, for really deep metals, ground penetrating radar is used in conjunction with the metal detector to unearth the hidden metal.
The origins of the metal detector are remarkable. The first metal detectors were created in the late 19th century. The purpose for these detectors was to make finding ore easier. However, the early detectors were difficult to use and took a lot of battery power. In those days, the German physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove invented the induction balance system, which took a hundred years to be seen as useful for metal detecting. The first detectors to model the current format emerged in the 1930's. Gerhard Fisher patented the first modern metal detector. He discovered metal detecting through a malfunction of his radio navigational system. His model was used in World War two to find land mines but after the war, people came up with new ways to use the metal detector, and the hobby was born.
Metal detectors are a rather exciting tool. They are among some of the most useful and common tools used today. Most people have seen at least one in their life, and it is hard to imagine never coming into contact with one. The metal detector is considered part of the detector radar family, because many detectors use the ground penetrating radar system to find deeply hidden metals. The history of the metal detector is also an interesting subject, and is something to think about while standing in those long security checkpoint lines.
